Running Kilos, that is what we called the men that had to run from one end of the ship to the other, thru the center rigging, correcting for weight imbalances. They were always a last resort, but sometimes we needed an extra 600 pounds at the bow or stern. If you are a mechanic, as I am, then during your off/leisure hours, you are Running Kilos.
We were headed home, northbound, passing the west coast of Africa. Coming off the Atlantic and brushing the coast of Africa we experience the rising hot air flowing like a reverse waterfall. The bow suddenly rises, we didn’t even have time to react. A few minutes of turbulence and 500 hundred feet of altitude gain and it was over. Made it home ok.
